Gold With Jeanette Schneider Episode 23: Boy To Man with Josh Dittmer

Josh Dittmer is the host of The Live More, Regret Less podcast and I’ve been so fortunate to find him in my podcasting journey. We had an incredible conversation on his podcast about the duality of femininity v masculinity and I finally found a guy who could talk the importance of rites of passage and how we view boys.

Josh digs into the natural initiation he went through that moved him from boy to man, the emotional wounds he dealt with head on, and the desire to learn from elders. We talk physicality meets emotion and a desire to grow into yourself. He harnesses his incredible energy and the own deep work he’s done and coaches men on the transition from boyhood to manhood, influence, success, direction, self reliance and responsibility for your own reality. He is my new favorite Aussie.

I love Josh’s very clear direction, “Boys need roles models to show us how to be men. We learn through experience and we learn through guidance.” I appreciate his emotional honesty and the space he takes up in the world.

Josh, you have a voice and a platform that is very needed. I can’t wait to see what you do with it.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 14: The Perpetual Heartbreak of Adult Children of Alcoholics with Travis Turner

Travis Turner has personally and professionally moved millions of dollars into his community and raised awareness to the scourge of domestic violence around the country. His is a very personal reason. After having a gun held to his head and watching his father batter his mother, who then turned to alcohol and methamphetamine, Travis decided to become a voice for those who are unseen or hide behind dark sunglasses and fear.

Travis is the Vice President of Administration for a FinTech organization and oversees their overall community and philanthropic initiatives. Travis just wrapped his term as President of Trustees for The Shade Tree Shelter and serves Noah’s Animal House, Executive Pride, The Mark E. Curry Family Foundation, The Smith Center, FanFare! And Club Curry.

Additionally, Travis is a licensed and certified life coach through The Arbinger Institute. He has been recognized as one of Las Vegas’ most Intriguing People, person of the year for The Shade Tree and has been featured in many different articles recognizing his work and commitment to philanthropy.

In this episode we talk about the life of an Adult Child of an Alcoholic (ACOA) and how those relationships either spur you to a life of intention or create cycles that have to be broken, and some really tough love advice he received from Sirius XM’s Dr. Laura. This is a heavy conversation, but so necessary for those with family members who experience addiction.

I hope this episode gives you a little insight into the mind of an ACOA and their perpetual heartbreak, whether it is you or someone you love.

If it is you – I see you. I hope you find some comfort in the advice offered to learn how to take care of yourself, create boundaries and drop expectations. Wrap yourself up in the love, life and family you create.

It has taken me decades to find my own truth after a life lived in the shadow of a severely addicted parent. If you’d like to dig in to the work I walk you step by step through the process in my book LORE: Harnessing Your Past to Create Your Future on Amazon or barnesandnoble.com.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 13: Women and Security with CIA Counterterrorism Expert Gina Bennett

Gina Bennett takes the scare out of national security and approaches it as a woman and mother. She talks resiliency, how women experience personal security differently from men and the importance of including girls in our conversations about security.

Gina is a member of the CIA’s Senior Analytic Service, and long-standing member of the Senior Analytic Service currently on assignment as the Senior Counterterorrism Advisor in the Directorate of Strategic Operational Planning in the National Counterterrorism Center. She is a seasoned counterterrorism specialist who authored the earliest warnings of some of today’s terrorism trends, including the 1993 report that warned of the growing danger of Osama Bin Laden and the extremist movement he was fomenting. We talk about her shift into national security and what I’m calling her sixth sense when it comes to the insightfulness of her work over decades.

Gina was featured in the 2015 Showtime documentary, Spymasters, the HBO documentary, Manhunt, and in the PBS documentary, Makers: Women Who Make America in their episode on women in war for her role as a trailblazing woman in the counterterrorism field. She has been featured in the cover story of Newsweek’s issue on “Women in CIA” in 2016 and in a previous Newsweek article for her role as a female pioneer in the targeting; and in a variety of media for her book, National Security Mom.

Gina teaches ethics in intelligence as an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University in the Security Studies Program of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and at the George Washington University in the International Policy and Practice program at the Elliot School of International Affairs. She is also a founding board member of Girl Security, an educational program to familiarize elementary-to-high school girls in national and international security issues. She is a single mom of five children.

I love Gina’s advocacy for women, her argument that we cannot allow fear to change the way we behave and the importance of women’s voices in security based on our personal experiences and perspectives.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 12 – Finding Heaven: Navigating Grief, Pregnancy and Radical Honesty with Lacey Johnson

Gold with Jeanette Schneider

Lacey Johnson lost her mother, her grandmother and two aunts in one terrible tragedy when she was six years old. She shares the path of a child navigating grief, her anger at having been abandoned by the women in her life and how she disavowed her femininity. It was as she became a mom that she unpacked all of her grief, layers of shame, old beliefs, and finally allowed herself to embrace what she calls her most divine assignment.

Lacey is an award-winning editor, essayist and journalist who earned her degree in media studies from Belmont University in 2011. She has worked with a broad range of celebrities and entrepreneurs — including fashion icon Betsey Johnson, spiritual guru Deepak Chopra, and Shark Tank‘s Daymond John, just to name a few. She is Founding Editor of The Wonder Report, Editor-in-Chief for The Connect magazine, and her work can be read in a variety of print and digital media sources including Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Woman’s Day, Mirabella, PopSugar, and others. She is also deep in the process of co-authoring her first book, which is a gutsy exploration of the illusions of fame, power and success, told through narratives involving some of the people the world most idolizes.

In this episode Lacey encourages people to delve into radical honesty and leave behind the masks of perfection we put on in order to survive. She also shares that holding on to old beliefs blocks us from the things we truly want in life and argues for the deep work we all must do to free ourselves. She ends the episode by sharing her advice to her younger self and dropped some serious gold nuggets.

I am so appreciative of how Lacey unravels her process and gives us a look at what it is like to be a child who has lost a parent and how the ways in which we relate to children dealing with grief may not be serving them.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 11: Shine Your Light with Dominique Goncalves

Dominique Gonçalves is a Mozambican ecologist focused on elephant conservation in Gorongosa National Park as well as a National Geographic Fellow. Her interest in biodiversity protection and human population increase inspired her to earn her MSC in Conservation Biology and now start a PhD in Biodiversity Management at Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) at University of Kent.

Dominique and I talked about the restoration of Gorongosa National Park after war, the loss of over a million Mozambicans and the decimation of many animals and land. She gets very personal about her own experience pursuing education when there weren’t always shoes or food to support her education. Yet, she is using her experience and education to build her community and ensure that the young girls outside of the park are not victims of child marriage.

Dominique currently serves as Manager of the Elephant Ecology Project where she investigates elephant movement and range expansion in relation to habitat use and Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC). Working with law enforcement and sustainable development colleagues, Dominique hopes to build coexistence between communities and wildlife throughout the buffer-zone surrounding the park. In addition to this, Dominique works closely with park Girls’ Club programs; she is a passionate advocate for girls education to prevent early marriage.

Find Dominique and learn about the team changing lives, both human and animal, at www.gorongosa.org

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 8: Debt-Free, Simple and Passionate Living with Jennifer Griffith

Today I am joined by Jennifer Griffith, writer, speaker and the founder of In the Life Of Zen, a lifestyle blog documenting her journey of debt-free, simple and passionate living. A Vice President for a healthcare media company, she marries her knowledge of business with a love for life. She encourages people to take power over their finances and their lives.

At one point in time Jen and husband, Jesse, were over $100,000 in debt and it was creating great strain on their marriage. They realized the only way out was through and today she shares the intentional path from debt to financial freedom. She provides her “top 5” steps to get started on a debt-free journey, encourages us to find a life of passion, gets real on growth in partnerships – including struggles around job loss, a devastating miscarriage and tells us to focus on the love you have to give.

I love Jennifer’s encouragement to find a life of passion and the tough love steps to start a created and curated life where you are living out loud and not so much to pay bills.
