Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 69: Mom & Boss with Mary Beth Ferrante

Mary Beth Ferrante believes you should bring your whole self to work and that the only way we can provide communities of support within the workplace, is to lead the conversation. She is a mom of 2, fiercely advocating for millennial working parents.

Today we talk about our own experiences as new moms in high functioning roles, how to manage our personal relationships, and why it is so important for companies to break down the Maternal Wall.

Mary Beth is the Co-Founder of WRK/360, an engagement platform for organizations to retain and attract talent by transforming workplace cultures to better support working parents and all caregivers. As a former SVP in the finance industry, she always valued growing her career and like so many other career-driven mamas, she was surprised to hit the Maternal Wall. Her own experience propelled her to dive deeper into maternal bias, to influence changes to workplace culture and to advocate for a national paid leave policy. She is regular contributor Forbes on the intersection of work and parenting and her work has been regularly featured in Today, Working Mother, FairyGodBoss, ScaryMommy, and more.

I loved Mary Beth’s reminder that communication is everything, especially in our personal relationships, and to communicate with our children, not around them. Talk, talk, talk, people. It saves your sanity.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 62: Communicate Like A Buddhist with Cynthia Kane

Cynthia Kane’s personal philosophy surrounding communication is based off the Buddhist principles of Right Speech: Tell the truth, Don’t exaggerate, Don’t gossip, Use helpful language. She believes a mix of non-violent communication, mindful communication and what she calls self-responsible communication help you and others suffer less.

Cynthia is a certified meditation and mindfulness instructor and the founder of the Kane Intentional Communication Institute, LLC. She is the author of How to Communicate Like a Buddhist (Hierophant Publishing, April 2016), Talk to Yourself Like a Buddhist (Hierophant Publishing, April 2018), and the upcoming book, How To Meditate Like A Buddhist (Hierophant Publishing, April 2020).

Cynthia is the founder of Kane Intentional Communication Institute, LLC in 2013. She has helped over 40,000 people change their way of communicating through her online courses, workshops, and training programs. She creates unique communication-focused mediations for her clients that assist people in having better communication in any difficult conversation or situation. Along with individuals, she has worked with organizations such as the Edlavitch Jewish Community Center of Washington, DC, BroadFutures, xScion Solutions, University of North Carolina Asheville, GiveYoga, and more.

Cynthia has taught meditation at The Council on Foreign Relations and has written for national and international publications including Self Magazine, VegNews, Pregnancy Magazine, The Jerusalem Post, The Washington Post, Woman’s Day, BBC Travel, Refinery29, Mind Body Green, Elephant Journal and Bustle.

Cynthia’s upcoming book, How To Meditate Like A Buddhist (Hierophant Publishing, April 2020) delves into tips for creating a regular meditation practice. It demystifies the ancient practice, while teaching the reader about posture, breathing, mind-set, and more; encompassing the most important aspects of Buddhist meditation in one accessible guide.

Today Cynthia and I talk about passive aggressive communication, and why it is so important to be aware of our default stance when it is time to have the tough conversations. We also talk about the mental health benefits of concise communication.

I appreciate Cynthia’s reminder that we should see the person across from us as someone we love, not someone to best.
