Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 12 – Finding Heaven: Navigating Grief, Pregnancy and Radical Honesty with Lacey Johnson

Lacey Johnson lost her mother, her grandmother and two aunts in one terrible tragedy when she was six years old. She shares the path of a child navigating grief, her anger at having been abandoned by the women in her life and how she disavowed her femininity. It was as she became a mom that she unpacked all of her grief, layers of shame, old beliefs, and finally allowed herself to embrace what she calls her most divine assignment.

Lacey is an award-winning editor, essayist and journalist who earned her degree in media studies from Belmont University in 2011. She has worked with a broad range of celebrities and entrepreneurs — including fashion icon Betsey Johnson, spiritual guru Deepak Chopra, and Shark Tank‘s Daymond John, just to name a few. She is Founding Editor of The Wonder Report, Editor-in-Chief for The Connect magazine, and her work can be read in a variety of print and digital media sources including Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Woman’s Day, Mirabella, PopSugar, and others. She is also deep in the process of co-authoring her first book, which is a gutsy exploration of the illusions of fame, power and success, told through narratives involving some of the people the world most idolizes.

In this episode Lacey encourages people to delve into radical honesty and leave behind the masks of perfection we put on in order to survive. She also shares that holding on to old beliefs blocks us from the things we truly want in life and argues for the deep work we all must do to free ourselves. She ends the episode by sharing her advice to her younger self and dropped some serious gold nuggets.

I am so appreciative of how Lacey unravels her process and gives us a look at what it is like to be a child who has lost a parent and how the ways in which we relate to children dealing with grief may not be serving them.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 11: Shine Your Light with Dominique Goncalves

Dominique Gonçalves is a Mozambican ecologist focused on elephant conservation in Gorongosa National Park as well as a National Geographic Fellow. Her interest in biodiversity protection and human population increase inspired her to earn her MSC in Conservation Biology and now start a PhD in Biodiversity Management at Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) at University of Kent.

Dominique and I talked about the restoration of Gorongosa National Park after war, the loss of over a million Mozambicans and the decimation of many animals and land. She gets very personal about her own experience pursuing education when there weren’t always shoes or food to support her education. Yet, she is using her experience and education to build her community and ensure that the young girls outside of the park are not victims of child marriage.

Dominique currently serves as Manager of the Elephant Ecology Project where she investigates elephant movement and range expansion in relation to habitat use and Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC). Working with law enforcement and sustainable development colleagues, Dominique hopes to build coexistence between communities and wildlife throughout the buffer-zone surrounding the park. In addition to this, Dominique works closely with park Girls’ Club programs; she is a passionate advocate for girls education to prevent early marriage.

Find Dominique and learn about the team changing lives, both human and animal, at www.gorongosa.org

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 10: Coming Home To A Life of Purpose (or The Sidelines Are Where Your Soul Goes To Die) with Alexis Michaud

Alexis Michaud spent the better part of two decades as a tax and corporate law attorney. She most recently held the title of Deputy General Counsel for a large company she took public, and then promptly left. She went from inking deals on private jets to creating her own real estate and design practice as a newly minted entrepreneur. It was her father’s stay in the ICU for 30 days that created a shift within that snapped her from long days, long nights, working weekends, skipping vacations for nearly a decade, taking 3 days off after the birth of her daughter via section to a moment of being DONE, “If not now, then when?”

Alexis flipped her steady path and hard earned career on its head, took 6 weeks off with her family, and decided it’s never too late to design a life you love.  She’s now an entrepreneur, Realtor, community enthusiast and is not looking back.  She’s coming home and living a life of purpose, passion, and is the driver of her one wild and crazy life.

Alexis and I talk about the scary steps between lives, what the word HOME means to us, supportive friendships, and how the sidelines are the place your soul goes to die. Alexis is soulful and determined. You are going to love her. Follow Alexis on IG at @pineappleandpinecones.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 9: The Wrong Kind of Woman with Naomi McDougall Jones

Today I am joined by Naomi McDougall Jones. Naomi is an award-winning writer, actress, producer, and women in film activist based in New York City. She is currently in post-production on her second feature film, BITE ME. Naomi’s first feature film, which she also wrote, produced, and starred in, was the 12-time award-winning Imagine I’m Beautiful. The film received a theatrical release and is now available on iTunes, Amazon, and GooglePlay. A pilot she wrote, The Dark Pieces, is now in development for television in Canada after having been named on The 2016 WriteHer List as one of the top 16 unproduced pilots by a female screenwriter.

Naomi is an advocate and thought leader for bringing gender parity to cinema. She gave a virally sensational TEDTalk, What it’s Like to Be a Woman in Hollywood, which has now been viewed over 1 million times and can be seen on TED.com. She is the Founder and Chief Impact Officer of The 51 Fund, a venture capital fund dedicated to financing films by female filmmakers. Naomi is currently writing a book, The Wrong Kind of Woman: Dismantling the Gods of Hollywood, which will be published by Beacon Press in January 2020.

I cannot wait to share the world in which she lives and creates because it is truly eye opening and offers us such insight into the influence of film, and it’s bias, in our lives.

I love Naomi’s passion to change the world of film and how she’s attacking it in so many ways. I love her advice never to shave pieces of yourself off and even when you’re terrified – do it anyway.

You can find Naomi and all of her beautiful projects here.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 8: Debt-Free, Simple and Passionate Living with Jennifer Griffith

Today I am joined by Jennifer Griffith, writer, speaker and the founder of In the Life Of Zen, a lifestyle blog documenting her journey of debt-free, simple and passionate living. A Vice President for a healthcare media company, she marries her knowledge of business with a love for life. She encourages people to take power over their finances and their lives.

At one point in time Jen and husband, Jesse, were over $100,000 in debt and it was creating great strain on their marriage. They realized the only way out was through and today she shares the intentional path from debt to financial freedom. She provides her “top 5” steps to get started on a debt-free journey, encourages us to find a life of passion, gets real on growth in partnerships – including struggles around job loss, a devastating miscarriage and tells us to focus on the love you have to give.

I love Jennifer’s encouragement to find a life of passion and the tough love steps to start a created and curated life where you are living out loud and not so much to pay bills.

Living intentionally is where its at, and if you are anything like me, you get out of bed and reach for your phone. I’d love to say that I do yoga first thing, but let’s be honest, I open my eyes to news and I’m ready to counter that with my own weekly intention journey. I’m inviting you. Totally free. Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 7: Cultivating Courage and Authenticity with Tiffany Hendra

From the trailer park to Beverly Hills and now back to Texas, Tiffany Hendra inspires women from all walks of life to live their most authentic, stylish and courageous lives. She is a wife, TV personality, empowerment & media coach, creator of Sanctuary Of Style and former cast member of Bravo’s Real Housewives Of Dallas. With her spitfire, but nurturing attitude, Tiffany gives women the nudge they need to exit their comfort zone, make friends with their fear and enter their courage zone. Her mission is to help women live in freedom by overcoming past negative programming, give up victimhood, find their voice, cultivate courage and live with UNAPOLOGETIC authenticity.

Tiffany and I talk about the courage zone, courage v fear, how action is sometimes messy and the authenticity and courage it took to leave Real Housewives of Dallas. She also shares the message she’d share with her younger self. This is a beautiful conversation.

Let’s dig in.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 6: You Are Stronger Than Your Stick

I just returned from a life-changing trip to Tanzania where I traveled amongst lions, zebras, wildebeest. I am still unpacking all of the lessons that a fully immersive trip serves up, but was struck by two very specific moments; one on the Serengeti and again during my time on what felt like the edge of the earth wading into the Indian Ocean off the coast of Zanzibar.

You cannot leave Africa unchanged and I wanted to pop on and share the biggest lessons I am taking with me while they’re still fresh in mind (and heart). I will share stories about the beauty of the people of East Africa, a heart of service and the difference between support and dependency.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 5: A Life In Transition (or “The Fresh Hell” of a Monday In a Soul Crushing Job) with Dan Mason

Today I am joined by Dan Mason. Dan is a nationally recognized career and life transition coach and host of the Apple #1 debut podcast, Life Amplified. His work has been featured at the Huffington Post, The Good Men Project, and the Nationally syndicated Elvis Duran Morning Show. Dan has helped clients in 13 countries discover their calling, leave their soul-crushing corporate jobs, and create careers that are meaningful to their bank account AND the world at large.

Dan and I dig into what he calls the “Fresh Hell” of a Monday morning in a soul sucking career and why it is important to know who you truly are and what desires are just outside that 9 to 5. We talk identity, titles, the reassessment of comfort zones and the death of the old school “American Dream.”

I love this conversation because Dan has successfully moved his clients from muted dreams into actionable next steps after he, himself, left a big deal job in radio to create his own life of service.

I love the way Dan pulls together research and soul. It is so important that we understand why we are chasing money over dreams, whether that is a passed down generational message or if it is time to lean into that secret passion.

Find Dan on Instagram @cscdanmason and subscribe to his podcast Life Amplified with Dan Mason.

Gold with Jeanette Schneider Episode 4: The Next Fight with Dr. Caroline Heldman

Today I am joined by Dr. Caroline Heldman, badass. Dr. Heldman is the unsung feminist hero. The Gloria Steinem of her generation.

A political scientist, political correspondent and professor at Occidental, Dr. Heldman has dedicated her life to social justice causes and does so because of her own experience with sexual violence and systems of power. She has authored a number of books, is the lead researcher for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and can be seen in documentaries Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In, amongst others.

What I love about this conversation is that Dr. Heldman gives us a glimpse into the day to day life of an activist. It is a tough calling, but one that fits her well. We talk the value of data driven arguments as women begin to ask for the pay they deserve and positions of power. We cover the influence media has on our girls and dig into the #metoo and End Rape on Campus movements.

I’m glad she is on our side.
